Vocabulary can be defined in multiple ways, depending on the content and grade level of students. When creating this website, the concept of vocabulary was viewed in the context of the Common Core ELA standards for grades 6-8.
According to Common Core Language Standards (National Governors Association Center for Best Practices & Council of Chief State School Officers 2010), students in middle school should be able to:
Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade level reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. This includes:
o Using context as a clue to the meaning
o Using common and grade-appropriate Greek or Latin affixes and roots as clues
o Consulting general and specialized reference materials, and
o Verifying the preliminary determination of the meaning.
Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. This includes:
o Interpreting figures of speech in context
o Using the relationship between words to better understand individual words, and
o Distinguishing among the connotations of words with denotations
Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate general academic and domain-specific words and phrases; gather vocabulary knowledge when considering a word or phrase important to comprehension or expression
